Entering the Season, Walther on Pastors, and the Might that Saves (Sunday Update)

What’s in the Sunday Update? First and foremost the sermon from Sunday, but also the most recent episode of Cross Defense, as well as the new pic of This Week’s Sign. I hope this new posting format will serve all of our subscribers well.

Sermon for 12/3/23

This week is the First Sunday in Advent (Ad Te Levavi) and the sermon was on the Gospel reading, Matthew 21:1-9. The podcast version was produced for the benefit of those who are unable to attend the Divine Service.

Readings for the Day:

  • Old Testament: Jeremiah 23:5-8
  • Epistle: Romans 13:(8-10) 11-14
  • Gospel: Matthew 21:1-9

Cross Defense for 12/2/23

C.F.W. Walther penned ten theses on the pastoral office, with proof from God’s Word, and the corresponding public confession of the Church based on that Word of God. During this time of year, congregations are preparing for new lay leaders to step into their offices. What sets the pastoral office apart from those offices? Learn all about the pastoral office in this episode!

This Week’s Sign for 12/3/23 to 12/9/23

This resource is not intended to discourage anyone from gathering in person around God’s Word and Sacraments. Matthew 18:20 and Hebrews 10:25 make it clear that God’s Divine Service is meant to be experienced physically with other Christians.

We give thanks to God that these sermons are a blessing to you and pray that if you’re in Humboldt County, you will join us on Sunday mornings at 10:30 AM as God wills. (See the map below for directions.) If you’re not within driving distance of Ferndale CA, we encourage you to use the Church Locator at LCMS.org to find a church near you so you can gather in person with the communion of saints in your area.
