Festival of St. John, Apostle and Evangelist | December 27

Who is John?
- Brother of James. Son of Zebedee and Salome
- Given the name Boanerges (along with his brother) by Jesus, which means “sons of thunder.” (Mark 3:17)
- Author of five books of the New Testament:
- The Gospel According To John (c.AD 90)
- One of four canonical Gospels
- 1 John (c. AD 85-95)
- 2 John (c. AD 85-95)
- 3 John (c. AD 85-95)
- Revelation (AD 95)
- The Gospel According To John (c.AD 90)
- The only one of Jesus’ twelve apostles who did not die a martyr’s death.
- Was sentenced to exile on the Island of Patmos where he received the Revelation of Jesus.
- His death marks the end of the apostolic era.
- Symbolized by an eagle because his Gospel soars high above the other three in its witness of the eternal Word.
Merciful Lord, cast the bright beams of Your light upon Your Church that we, being instructed by the doctrine of Your blessed apostle and evangelist John, may come to the light of everlasting life; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, Now and forever. Amen.
